Weather conditions
Since Tanzania is located near the equator, temperatures vary little throughout the year. It is slightly warmer from November to March and slightly cooler April through October, with an average temperature of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius (75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperatures drop by about 6.5 degrees Celsius for every 1000 meter increase in elevation (3.5 degrees Fahrenheit per 1000 feet increase). It is hotter and more humid along the coast. Other low lying areas, such as the western and southern parks, are also hot but much less humid. The rest of the interior is much milder and cools down significantly at night. Tanzania has wet and dry seasons. The wet season is from March to May and the dry season is from June to October.
All seasons are equally good for viewing African wildlife. There are many animals in Tanzania’s national parks and the chance to see the “Great African Five” – elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalo – are equally good throughout the year. However, each game reserve has its own ‘seasonal features’. Serengeti is known for its great annual migration of antelopes, zebras and wildebeests. The best views from Mount Kilimanjaro are available from December to March, while Mount Meru is best to climb from June to February. Animals are easier to spot during the sun-scorched dry season, while photographers seem to prefer the wet season
Passport and Visa
All passport holders are required to have a Tanzanian Tourist Visa to enter Tanzania. A visa can be obtained in advance of your visit from any Tanzanian consulate. However, most visitors obtain their visas at the airport upon their arrival. Tanzanian tourist visas cost $100 USD for visitors possessing a United States passport, and $50 USD for all other passport holders. Since this amount is subject to change, it is recommended that you verify this information before your trip. Upon your arrival you will need to show your passport and will need to pay for your visa in cash. (US dollars printed on or after 2009). New, crisp dollars bills are recommended to avoid any problems.
Exchange rate
Since exchange rates change frequently, it is recommended that you check on the current rate at the time of your trip. US dollars and Tanzanian shillings are accepted at most Tanzanian businesses. ATMs are available at airports and at banks in Tanzania, so obtaining Tanzanian shillings is not difficult. If you are bringing USD currency with you, they need to be printed on or after 2009, as notes before that date are not accepted in Tanzania.
Health and Vaccinations
It is important that you visit your travel doctor before your visit to Africa. There are a range of vaccinations that your doctor may recommend. Currently, the only mandatory vaccine is for Yellow Fever, and you will be asked to produce a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon your arrival in Tanzania in order to enter the country. Other vaccinations you might consider are for Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, Typhoid and Cholera. Taking a malarial prophylactic is also recommended and your doctor can advise which type is best for you.
